Course Descriptions

Old Testament: The purpose of this course is to grant a good working knowledge of the geography and people that make up Israel's history and Biblical writings. This class will meet weekly to discuss the assigned readings. A short quiz will be given weekly and unit tests will evaluate each student's progress.

New Testament: The purpose of this course is to grant a good working knowledge of the geography and people that make up New Testament times and Biblical writings. This course also meets weekly, with students held accountable for the assigned readings through discussion and quizzes.

Hermeneutics: This class is offered during the fall quarter of SBS each year. The goal is to revolutionize the way a student of the Bible studies God's Word. A basic Bible study method will be introduced and the various problems of interpreting the different literary genre of the Bible will be discussed.

Exegesis 1: This class will be offered during the spring quarter of SBS each year. Students will employ the skills learned in Hermeneutics in order to study and interpret the book of Titus.

Reading Church History: This survey course covers the history of the Church from its inauguration by Christ through the 20th century. Each class period, students read aloud from Dr. Bruce Shelley's book Church History in Plain Language. Tests are given after each unit.

Systematic Theology 1,2,& 3: These 3 courses examine the basic doctrines of the Christian faith. Using Dr. Wayne Grudem's text, the students will read selected chapters, discussing and shaping their own theological positions. Upon completion of each section, the students will compile a personal doctrinal statement.

Introduction to Biblical Languages: Since the Bible was written in Hebrew & Greek, serious students of Scripture find it helpful to have a basic familiarity with the Biblical languages. The aim of this course is to teach students the Greek & Hebrew alphabets and some elementary concepts of Biblical Greek that will aid in using the Bible study resources available today.

Exegesis 2: This course will combine the skills learned in Hermeneutics with elementary Greek skills to interpret the Seven Letters of Revelation 2 - 3.

Doulos Leadership: The Greek word for "slave" is doulos. The apostles considered themselves slaves of Christ because they knew that, through His sacrifice, Christ had purchased them out of slavery to sin for slavery to righteousness. This series, taught by several of the staff and elders of HPEFC, will focus on how leaders can serve Christ in their public ministry as well as in their private lives.

English Grammar for Biblical Studies: The purpose of this course is to familiarize or review basic English grammar and sentence structure necessary for more effective study of your Bible. It will be useful for those who need to review their English grammar before they try to tackle basic Hermeneutics or the Introduction to Biblical Languages.

Church History I: This seminar series will look at the birth of the Church from the time of Jesus to its ascendancy as the dominant religion fo the Roman Empire by the early fourth century A.D. We will utilize the text: The Birth of the Church by Ivor J. Davidson as the principle text for this course.
